| A very thin concentration of fragrance molecules of a human in need is needed . Above that a layer of meters thick
rubble, as a result of an earthquake destroying everything in it’s
path. And yet the dog starts digging at exactly the right spot after searching for a
while. At a depth of 4 metres he finds the victim. There is no device in the world that comes even close to the smelling ability of
dogs.
The dog learns the trade in a playing way: he has to find his
toy. If he finds it the reward will follow: He can play for a while.
With the training the ‘victim´ carries the toy with him. The challenge for the dog is to find the
toy. That he also finds the victim at the same time is not as important for the dog.
During a disaster the dog smells a person buried under the rubble: The dog associates the human smell with the toy and bingo. A tasty bone might seem a better reward but it is didactically
irresponsible. The dog could be looking for a fridge and not for a missing person in a collapsed building.
The LISAR dogs are certified for searching for missing persons in any condition.
