SAR
K9 Cours in Singapore
Singapore Civil Defence
Force.
The Singapore Government
realised that there are now certificated SAR K9 available in the of region
Asia.
The Singapore Government
contacted LiSAR, to give SAR courses and delivery of eight young SAR
dogs.
The assignment was: Teach
eight students to handle Search and Rescue dogs and train the eight dogs up
to the stage of advanced / experience SAR DOG.
For this project, LiSAR
developed a new training method, based on IRO SAR Urban standards and useful
for the Singapore Civil Defence Force and the regions of Asia. This was
necessary because the most breeds are not useful in this tropical climate,
so we advised the Singapore Civil Defence Force to buy eight Mechelse
Shepherds (malinois).
From January until March
2004, LiSAR tested over 40 dogs and out of those 40 dogs we selected eight
suitable dogs.
The first part, the
beginners- course, we planned in April 2004 in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The second part, the
advanced course we planed in June 2004 in Singapore. The time between the
first course and the second course is, because the dogs had to be in
quarantine and to acclimatize to the tropical heat.
The third part, the
certification for overseas missions , we planned in February 2005.
The students had to pass
the theoretical and practical tests of the beginners-course, before they
could go to the next stage of advanced, and then to overseas missions
course.

Another problem that we
noticed, when a disaster happens in the region of Asia., no real SAR K9 team
from Europe ,can help for the full 100%.
For example: if the SAR
dogs come from a winter season in Europe or other parts off the world , and
they have to be flown into the tropical region of Asia, the SAR dog team
have to acclimatize. If they don't do that the humidity and heat can kill
their SAR dogs during the work. It’s no use for these teams to go, if they
can work for only five minutes.
