The Singapore Government contacted LiSAR, to give SAR courses and delivery of eight young SAR dogs. The assignment was: Teach eight students to handle Search and Rescue dogs and train the eight dogs up to the stage of advanced / experience SAR DOG. For this project, LiSAR developed a new training method, based on IRO SAR Urban standards and useful for the Singapore Civil Defence Force and the regions of Asia. This was necessary because the most breeds are not useful in this tropical climate, so we advised the Singapore Civil Defence Force to buy eight Mechelse Shepherds (malinois). LiSAR tested over 40 dogs and out of those 40 dogs we selected eight suitable dogs. The first part, the beginners- course, we planned in The Netherlands and Belgium. The second part, the advanced course we planned in Singapore. The time between the first course and the second course is, because the dogs had to be in quarantine and to acclimatize to the tropical heat.
